Ananda Natya School of Indian Dance was founded in 2003 by Director Andrea Luchese. Ananda is the Sanskrit word for joy and natya refers to the age-old tradition of dance from south India. “Ananda Natya” is the joy of dance.
Bharata Natyam helps dancers develop both mental concentration and physical stamina, which in turn imparts motor coordination, musicality, and grace. The art form celebrates beauty and helps to bring forth feminine grace in young girls and women alike. Dancers delight in the pleasure of donning the colorful fabrics, sparkly jewels, exotic make-up, and ankle bells that comprise the traditional costumes. As students begin to perform, they learn how to embody deep inner focus, as well as a confident outer presence. These important skills help dancers feel more grounded and centered in everyday life. For those more spiritually inclined, the sacred dance style of Bharata Natyam also helps dancers cultivate bhakti, a devotional capacity that can be practiced in any path or tradition.

Indian dance classes are offered in an engaging, friendly, and structured environment. Rhythmic steps and mimetic storytelling skills are taught in a progressive manner to provide a solid foundation for technique and movement ability, as well as creative expression. While learning dances that tell stories, students are exposed to the spiritual dimensions of Indian dance and learn about the different gods and goddesses of India, particularly as they relate to epics and legends that have been kept alive through the ages.
Bharata Natyam (Indian Classical Dance) classes for beginning and intermediate students are offered for children and adults. Classes include instruction in basic elements, including adavus (rhythmic steps), mudras (hand gestures), dances that combine both, as well as an introduction to the customs and culture of India.
Children’s classes are offered for kids ages 9 and up.
Adult workshops are offered seasonally or by invitation.
All students perform in Ananda Natya’s year-end recital in May.
Ananda Natya Indian Dance Company is open to students in their fourth year or higher (or by invitation). Ananda Natya Junior Indian Dance Company is open to students in their third year or higher (or by invitation).
